WHAT IS PILATES AND WHAT IS STOTT PILATES®?

The Pilates method was started by Joseph Pilates (born Germany 1880) in the early part of the twentieth century. He pioneered a series of 500-plus exercises to be performed on a mat and on specialised resistance equipment. He originally had the rehabilitation market in mind, but when he opened a studio in New York City in the 1920's, his method quickly became popular with the dance world for its ability to foster strength and endurance, whilst creating long, lean muscles.

Early devotees of Joseph Pilates included dance legends George Ballanchine, Hanya Holm and Martha Graham.

Moira Merrithew (formerly Moira Stott, co-founder of STOTT PILATES) trained extensively in Joseph Pilates' method at his studio in New York City.

The STOTT PILATES approach preserves the essence of Joseph Pilates' teachings whilst enhancing them with contemporary knowledge about the body and how it functions.

As adapted by a team of professionals under the direction of Ms. Merrithew the system of mind - body exercise known as STOTT PILATES involves more initial pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilisation exercises than were present in the original method. Additionally the anatomical based concepts of 'neutral' spine and pelvis are incorporated to help restore the natural curves of the spine (a departure from the original technique and other forms of fitness that specify a 'pelvic tilt' to flatten the back).

With an emphasis on breath, core conditioning and body awareness, STOTT PILATES exercise is a safe and highly effective way to stretch, strengthen and streamline your body without building bulk or stressing your joints. Performed on a mat, or with specialised equipment, STOTT PILATES is a fitness regime for a lifetime.

The perfect complement to cardiovascular exercise, sport, rehab and life - STOTT PILATES exercises will leave you looking toned, revitalised, and moving with ease.
